This has been the best General Election result for the Liberal Democrats in a century.

With the last votes counted we have won 72 of the 650 constituencies represented in Parliament.

While we sadly did not win any of the Tameside seats, we made gains in neighbouring Hazel Grove (Lisa Smart MP, majority 6,500) and nearby Cheadle (Tom Morrison MP, majority over 12,000).

• In Stalybridge & Hyde some 1,080 people backed Kamala Kugan.

• In Gorton & Denton 1,399 voted for John Reid.

• And in Ashton-Under-Lyne, 1,411 of you supported Dominic Hardwick.

In recent times our best result had been in 2005, when we won 62 seats. This election was fought on new boundaries and although at dissolution we had 15 MPs, the experts reckoned we would have won just 8 seats in 2019 under these boundaries – so to go from 8 to 72 is an enormous step forward.
